40 Ways to Character Development

The 40 Principles is a values education program designed specifically for two groups of people: youth ages 13- 20 and adults 21 and up. Our mission is to help people understand, internalize and exhibit the character values that make them responsible and productive adults, fathers, mothers, leaders and image bearers of God. Our vision is that they all become spiritually strong, mentally awake and morally straight men and women that God intended them to be.

Although the principles are woven throughout all of our leadership, organizational and personal development activities, the 40 principles can be taught individually (as in a single meeting) or in a cluster (such as for a small group or during a conference or seminar). However, for the best effect and long term behavioral change to take place,  a 40 or 52 week roundtable discussion format is preferred.

A person's road to transformation truly begins when he or she agrees to set aside two hours per week over the course of one year for self improvement. Each student spends one hour each week participating in unique, group study where a single principle is examined that is designed to become the seed for his or her change. There are 40 principles that are taught in a roundtable, interactive discussion format, and they have been placed in a specific order to help participants get to know themselves, and measure their actions and their reactions. These principles have been categorized into four modules or semesters: character, vision, courage and leadership.

Character
Character establishes the foundational attributes needed for an individual to take responsibility for themselves. This is the concept of rights versus responsibility. This module will help structure the individual from the inside out.

          Restraint                                          Patience                                        Hard Work                                      Productivity

          Generosity                                      Humility                                         Motives                                           Dependability

          Honesty                                          Temper

Vision
Vision and perspective is designed to impact the mind of the leader. This module will help change the point of view. Many problems, especially those involving communication, can be solved with another perspective.

Attitude                                           Proper Thinking                           Planning                                         Trust in God

          Facts                                                Emotions                                       Common Sense                            Sowing

          Goals                                               Prosperity

Courage
Courage helps to establish the will of an individual. This module stresses the importance of being able to make change happen by becoming an agent of change.

          Direction                                       Conflict                                          Criticism                                         Pressure
          Judgment                                      Morality                                         Forgiveness                                   Ownership

         Confrontation                               Parameters

Leadership
The leadership module stresses the power of favor and influence. Personal power is greater than positional power. This module focuses on building relationships that bring about royalty trust and commitment. It is important that everyone understand how to work together in this new form of team leadership.

          Ambition                                      Responsibility                               Saving                                            Debt

Understanding People              Developing People                      Listening                                        Inspiration

          Co-Signing                                   Chastisement

The second hour per week is spent outside of the roundtable discussion in some form of physical exercise

or activity. Exercise is a crucial element for healthy living, and as such each participant will be required to do

something physical each week. This can be playing a sport, going to a gym, swimming, hiking, taking a walk,

or any activity that is physically exertive. Participants are required to submit a physical activity report at the

first roundtable of each week.
