Benefits of Leadership Development

Any organization can benefit from a leadership development program. By maximizing the effectiveness of your leadership pool, your entire workforce reaps benefits. While morale is a big part of this equation, a lot of the benefits are easier to demonstrate tangibly, and impact the organizations bottom line.  Here are seven ways a leadership development program can benefit your company.

• Boosts Morale: The most obvious benefit is also the hardest to measure. A poor leader can make any worker miserable, and miserable workers don't do their jobs well. Having your leaders be well trained and intentional in how they lead will have an immediate impact on the work environment, which leads to a snowball effect of positive outcomes. Though morale seems like an abstract, that doesn't mean that the results aren't noticeable.

• Limits Employee Turnover: Keeping your workers motivated, content and showing them respect makes it less likely they will leave. Less turnover impacts the bottom line immensely; you get to keep skilled staff and team dynamics while avoiding the cost of recruiting and training new employees. Don't underestimate the cost of cycling through a perpetually non-content workforce.

• Increases Productivity: Effective leaders are able to guide their team and minimize obstacles. They get the best results out of the resources at their disposal. This means that the team members are ultimately empowered to succeed, resulting in much better productivity.

• Provides Better Vision: When leaders are well-connected with their teams, they can see the issues effecting the group better. This vision makes problem solving easier and keeps the group from being blindsided. Also, the more aware leaders are of the group, the better they are at creating a solid set of actionable goals which can lead to success.

• Fosters New Ideas: An effective leader is a good facilitator, making them comfortable enough to share new ideas, and allowing for them to study those ideas in detail. Being a good steward of new ideas can help keep your organization dynamic and ever evolving.

•Improves Client Satisfaction: Clients see that the company is investing in its people and that they can access the industry’s “best and brightest.”

• Creates Stronger Branding: This occurs from a candidate attraction and retention perspective to an overall perception in the industry.

Leadership Effectiveness

Just as people are not all born with the ability or desire to play golf like Tiger Woods or sing like Luciano Pavarotti, people are not all born with the ability to lead. Different personal traits and characteristics can help or hinder a person's leadership effectiveness and require formalized programs for developing leadership competencies. Yet everyone can develop their leadership effectiveness. However, achieving such development takes focus, practice and persistence more akin to learning a musical instrument than reading a book.

Uniqueness of Our Model

There are many aspects of our Leadership Development program that are unique, ranging from the expereince of the trainers and coaches, to the material being presented. Here are a few more:

Mobile Training: One of the most unique aspects of our leadership development program is that we are mobile - we bring the leadership development to the board room, the classroom and the field. Much of the training is classroom based to be sure. However, we also go wherever your employees are! It doesnt matter if you have one office or 100. Although we attempt to consolidate trainings wherever possible for efficiency, we like to visit field offices in the interim to check on "real world " leadership challenges and opportunities. We may also schedule a training in a different location in order to break up the routine.  These visits also offer another level of accountablity and test leaders on their ability to remain flexible.

Character Training: At the core of our leadership development training is character development. Whether it be the complete 40 Principles, or one module like Courage or Vision, instilling character values is essential in leadership development. We use the LaRed training method (an international training organization), which emphasizes a roundtable, highly interactive format. This training method is well proven to effect long term change in participants and develops principled leaders for life!

Practicum Emphasis: When attempting to effect behavioral change, it's extremely important that participants have plenty of opportunities to practice what they have learned. Our program has assigned practicums built into the leadership model. It could be a group project where team members have to solve a problem or complete an exercise. It could be an invidual exercise where participants must explain a concept, answer some questions, or take a survey. Whatever practicum is chosen will emphasize a principle being taught to the entire group.

Field Trips: There are certain aspects of our leadership development training that can only be conducted outside of the office. It could be a high or low ropes course emphasizing trust. Or it could be a cooperative exercise like passing a body through  an inner tube, emphasizing teamwork. Certain retreat sites are best to conduct these field exercises, and have the added benefit of getting people out of their comfort zones, which helps in behavior modification. At least once during the training, we will schedule a field trip (more if possible), depending on availability of participants and approval from management.

1,3 & 5 Day Excursions: Like a game show in which participants must advance to the next level by completing certain assignments (such as adventure activities and trust games), our leadership development excursions, held at an Spruce Lake Retreat, builds on themselves, like layers of an onion. The Ultimate Challenge focuses on practicing the leadership development skills learned throughout the training, as teams compete one with the other to be named the Ultimate Leaders! In this way, we make learning fun, and give participants an experience that will stay with them forever.
